Protests in South Yemen
Between September 6 and 11, 2018, numerous demonstrations took place in several South Yemeni cities, including Aden and in the governorates of Abyan, Lahij, Al-Dhali, Soqotra, Al-Mahra and Hadhramaut. The demonstrators protested against the financial policies of the internationally recognized government of President Hadi and against the disastrous living conditions in South Yemen. In the protest marches, the demonstrators also rejected the decision of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffith, who excluded South Yemenis from preliminary talks for future peace negotiations. In early September 2018, the Southern Transitional Council called on South Yemenis in a statement to demonstrate against peace negotiations without South Yemeni participation. At the demonstrations, protesters carried the flag of the former People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen and placards with slogans against the government.
